Autumn. It’s the favorite time of the year for basic b*tches like me. Pumpkin Spice Lattes, red-orange lipstick, black leggings and kale. Today we are discussing how you can update your makeup (and skincare) bag from summer to fall.
Skincare Update
It’s fall and that means the start of dry air. A lot of times this means that your skin is now getting drier and more irritated. If you have oily skin, you probably won’t notice too much of a difference, but you can still take note of some tips.
Cleanser:
I love my Balea Med Ultra Sensitiv Waschgel, but in autumn I tend to use cream cleansers, to make sure I am not stripping my skin of its natural oils. I like using the Bog Myrtle and Lime Balancing Cleanser from West Barn Co. with a bamboo cloth. This cleanser is a toner at the same time.
Serum:
If you don’t have a serum in your skincare regime, now might be a good time to start! Serums are liquids full of skincare benefits and usually contain a high concentration of active ingredients. For dry skin in autumn and winter (but also generally for dry skin) I can recommend hyaluronic acid. My favorites are the Paula’s Choice Hyaluronic Acid Booster and the The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Serum.
Serums are always applied before skincare. That way they can be absorbed by the skin the best.
Moisturizer:
In the summer I prefer using a light moisturizer, followed by sunscreen of course! In the winter, skin can usually need something a little richer. Look for moisturizers with fatty acids and ceramides. My favorites for the winter are:
- Milk Vegan Moisturizer
- Paula’s Choice Clinical Ceramide Enriched Night Cream
- Paula’s Choice Clinical Ceramide Enriched Eye Cream
Often it suffices just changing up your night time skincare, if you prefer using something lighter during the day.
Foundation Update
I am as white as the wall and burn after 2 minutes in the sun without SPF. So I avoid the sun at all costs and still I am a couple of shades lighter in the winter than in the summer. You should check whether your current foundation shade still matches your skin tone or if you need something a little lighter for autumn/winter.
If you are happy with your foundation, you can just buy it a couple of shades lighter. However if your skin changes type a little in the winter, you might want to change the formulation too.
My go-to cold seasons foundations are the Face Atelier Ultra Foundation Pro and the NYX Bare with Me Tinted Skin Foundation.
The same is true for concealer.
Colors
I do like looking at the Pantone New York Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2020/2021 Trend Colors, but personally I cannot afford getting a new wardrobe and makeup collection every few months. I always go through my collection and see what I already own and try to incorporate that into my looks. This also forces me to leave my comfort zone and get creative. But generally speaking, I do have classic autumn colors in my head.
Lips: Red-Orange Lipstick
Red-orange lipstick, wine stained lips, berry and brown tones are autumn lips for me. I like wearing dark lips with a muted eye look and glowy skin.
- Danessa Myricks Luxe Cream Palette in The Nudist
- smashbox Always on Liquid Lipstick in Driver’s Seat and Always on
- Jeffree Star Velour Liquid Lipstick in Unicorn Blood
- Memi High Shine Gloss in bout you
Eyes
Autumn = warm colors. For me. Of course, you can have completely different associations! Don’t take my tips as “rules”, because as we know, makeup has no rules!
My favorite eyeshadow palettes with warm neutrals ins the Viseart Warm Mattes Palette, the Violet Voss Holy Grail Palette and the Zoeva Caramel Melange Palette.
In this golden season, gold on the eyes is always nice! A great golden product is the Linda Hallberg Interstellar Vegan multi-use glitter liquid eyeshadow.
Blush:
Like with the eyes, in autumn I like to go warm on my cheeks. A great, pretty inexpensive, palette is the Makeup Revolution Ultra Blush Palette in Hot Spice. And of course, I cannot live without my Anastasia Beverly Hills Blush Trio in Peachy Love. Anastasia also makes a nice, autumn-y trio for deeper skin tones, the Blush Trio in Berry Adore.
