Red Lipstick Makeup Look

Red lipstick only became popular around the 20th century. Before that it was mainly associated with morally questionable women. It even meant that they were mingling with evil! I can identify pretty well, so here is my red lipstick makeup look.

A few tips for the perfect lipstick application:

Red lipstick was a fearful topic for me as a makeup artist, for a long time! With a color like that, you see every mistake and ever asymmetry! However, even as a makeup artist it is possible to improve, so here are the tips I have learned along the way:

  1. You are probably so sick of hearing this form me, but even here skin prep is the most important part. Especially if you are wearing lipstick, the surface of the lips needs to be as smooth as possible and hydrated. The best thing would be to do a lip peeling and then smother your lips in a great lip balm, which you can even extend past your lip contour.
  2. Use a lip liner. It doesn’t have to be a perfect match for your lipstick. The point of a lip liner is mainly, that you can correct your lips with it. So working on symmetry and maybe making your lips seem larger or smaller.
  3. If you are using a normal cream lipstick, you can wear a liquid lipstick underneath it, to extend its wear-time.
  4. Please don’t correct mistakes with your fingers! That never really ends well and you just smudge all your hard work. Try using a q-tip or some concealer instead.
  5. If you do have a matching lip liner to your lipstick, you can go over the contour of your lips with it, after you have applied your lipstick. This makes a cleaner edge.
  6. If you want the opposite effect, you can dot the edges a little with your finger. This way you get a more natural look.
