I can still hear my mother today: “If you shave, your hairs will come back darker and thicker!”. Of course, I didn’t listen to her. As any good teenager would and you know what? Mothers aren’t always right after all! Today I am sharing my Dermaflash Luxe Review with you!
What is the Dermaflash Luxe?
Dermaflash themselves describe this device as an “anti-aging, exfoliation & peach fuzz removal device”. So it’s a kind of razor that removes dead skin cells and vellus hair (peach fuzz). This should also increase the efficacy of active ingredients, as they can penetrate the skin more easily. The Dermaflash Luxe is an “at-home” Dermaplaning device.
Great, but what the hell is Dermaplaning?
During a Dermaplaning procedure a specific blade (dermatome), kind of like a scalpel, is used to remove the uppermost layer of the skin. This starts a revitalizing process. New skin cells are being formed and the skin seems fresher and more youthful.
In the U.S. and Asia this procedure has been available since the 70s. Back then, paradoxically, this was offered as a treatment for Acne Vulgaris. Today we know that an actively irritated skin should definitely not be dermaplaned. In Vienna I have not found an aesthetician or a dermatologist that offers Dermaplaning.
My Dermaflash Luxe Experience: What, Where, How much?
I bought my Dermaflash Luxe on the website Current Body for €160. There are other providers, but this is where you can get it for the best price in Austria.
This is what you get:
- Dermaflash Luxe (the device)
- charging cable and adapter
- charging station
- 4 Dermaflash Luxe Edges (these are the blades)
- a small bottle of Preflash Cleanser
- a small bottle of Postflash Moisturizer
The biggest cost factor
Before I bought this I was not aware that you should use this device once a week and the blades are single use. This means 52 blades a year. Of course, I tried using the blades multiple times, but I would strongly advise against that, as I broke out pretty much every time I did that.
The cheapest offer for the Dermaflash Edges is on Current Body. 12 Blades for €100. Unfortunately you can only order them with the skin care bottles. I would prefer to use my own. So that’s €8,33 per blade, or €433,16 a year, if you use it once a week.
That cheaper than getting a facial every week, but it’s a lot more expensive than buying an eyebrow shaper (like this one) every week. The latter had been my way of removing unwanted hair in my face for a long time.
Apparently Mother Nature decided not to listen when it came to my body hair and the whole “blonde women have more estrogen and therefore less body hair” thing. My hairs are extremely light, but I have a lot of it. I noticed quite quickly in my personal makeup history, that I prefer foundation without the peach fuzz. That’s why I used the eyebrow shapers for a long time. They have exactly the same effect, it just takes a lot longer. Also, it is easier to cut yourself with the latter.
How to use the Dermaflash Luxe:
It is very easy to use. Let the device charge fully before using for the first time and you can get started!
- You should clean your skin thoroughly before using. You don’t have to use the cleanser they give you, even though it is actually formulated quite nicely.
- Take up a fresh blade with the device.
- Turn it on. You have the choice between two vibration intensities: gentle or invigorating.
- Make sure to hold the skin tight and hold the Dermaflash Luxe at a 45° angle to the skin. Glide over the skin in short, soft strokes. Please don’t dermaplane your neck, lips and nose!
- Now you are ready to moisturize. Done!
My skin is alway red after using this, but my skin also turns red when I touch it with a feather so… Generally it calms down quite quickly and it feels soft and fresh.
The longterm effect
Dermaflash claims that regular use decreases fine lines. I can’t confirm that effect. I’ve been using the device for about 6 months, but not every week, more like every 2-3 weeks. Otherwise it is too expensive for me. The positive results for me are: my skin is less dry and flakey and the hairs really get removed perfectly.
But don’t the hairs grow back darker and thicker?
No, this is a myth. Nothing is changed at the root of the hair, so it doesn’t effect growth, thickness or color. Shaving cuts the hairs off in a straight way, that way you feel stubbles when it grows back.
When should I not use the Dermaflash Luxe?
People with active acne, herpes zoster, hemophilia and extremely sensitive or weak skin should not be using the Dermaflash Luxe. You should also stay away from Dermaplaning when you are taking blood thinners or Isotretinoin (Accutane).
My Conclusion
I am noticing a trend in my reviews: I constantly review things that are nice to have, but absolutely not necessary. It’s the same thing with the Dermaflash Luxe. Sure, you can get the effect for a lot cheaper if you want, but the device makes it easy and fast.
If you want to get the device solely for hair removal, I’d advise against it. I feel like there are much better and cheaper hair removal options out there.
So, as the name suggests, it is a luxury item. I like having and using it, but I frown every time I have to order new blades.
